Components and Key Items That Make Up a Project Schedule. Importance of a Project Schedule. One of the most important aspects of project management is a project schedule. Whether you are managing projects for a Fortune 5. Let’s examine what a project schedule is, what it consists of, and how to use it effectively.
![]() A project schedule is a tool used to help manage resources and tasks, and it will help to guide a project to a successful completion. The schedule lists the tasks to be completed during the project as well as identifying what resources – personnel and materials – are necessary to complete that task. This usually comes in the form of a Statement of Work (SOW) or Scope Statement, which is a detailed description of what will be accomplished during the life of the project. A schedule can be as simple as a handwritten diagram or a complex chart created using a software application like Microsoft Project. What is important is that the level of detail within the schedule be appropriate for the project while still being a useful source of guidance. Each individual task identified in the schedule is given a duration consisting of a start and end time. Resources can then be assigned to the tasks, and milestones can be set at significant points within the project schedule. Milestones are very useful aspects of a schedule. They are significant events with zero duration that help gauge the progress of a project, which can be helpful for senior management. By viewing a project schedule report, senior management can see a high overview of how the project is progressing. They can also make sure that milestones are being reached within an acceptable time frame. Often a Gantt chart - a standard format for displaying projects - is used to list task durations, including start and finish dates. A Gantt chart displays the information in much the same manner as a calendar, listing summary tasks as well as milestones. Many software applications such as Microsoft Project or Gantt. Project can help create this type of chart for reporting purposes. You can see a sample Microsoft Project schedule in Figure 1. Once the schedule is created, it can be used as a gauge for how the project is progressing. Tasks that are not being completed on time can be identified, and resources can be allocated where necessary. Reports can be created for stakeholders or management that summarize where a project is at any given point. Most importantly the project schedule can keep a project moving along so that it finishes on time, utilizes resources appropriately, and completes successfully. P2. 5 CAP | Homeland Security. Emergency responders must exchange communications seamlessly across disciplines and jurisdictions to successfully respond to incidents emergencies. Multiple products and applications from various suppliers support radio communications, but product incompatibilities can compromise emergency response operations. Project 2. 5 (P2. LMR) systems so emergency responders can exchange critical communications across agencies and jurisdictions. P2. 5 standardizes interfaces between the various components of the LMR systems emergency responders’ use. Congress legislated the P2. Compliance Assessment Program (P2. CAP) to ensure LMR equipment complies with P2. For further information on P2. CAP, please see About P2. CAP section below. About P2. 5 CAPThe P2. CAP is a partnership of the U. S. Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Office for Interoperability and Compatibility (OIC), industry, and the emergency response community. The initial program focus is on the Common Air Interface, which allows for over- the- air compatibility between radios and tower equipment. For more information on P2. CAP, watch a video and read the following overview documents listed below: The P2. CAP Video highlights the P2. CAP Advisory Panel’s efforts to review, evaluate and update the standards to keep pace with advances in digital communications. The P2. 5 CAP Fact Sheet describes how the P2. CAP works, the value of the program to public safety, and the program’s long- term- goals. The P2. 5 CAP Charter provides an overview of the program, the program’s operating framework, and the roles and responsibilities of the involved parties. The P2. 5 CAP FAQs document addresses commonly asked questions about the program. Program Updates. August 3. Testing Deadline Extended to February 2. In August 2. 01. 6, DHS OIC set an August 3. P2. 5 CAP radio manufacturers replace existing STR and SDOCs based on 2. CAB testing requirements with STR and SDOCs based on 2. CAB testing requirements. Along the way, delays in the recognition of P2. CAP laboratories caused delays with the testing of equipment. Given that, OIC sought waiver requests from manufacturers to maintain their equipment’s STR and SDOC on the website. Many requests were submitted leading OIC to request, and successfully secure, an additional six month extension from DHS Headquarters to maintain the non- 5. STR and SDOCs on the website. OIC is now requesting manufacturers and laboratories replace their 2. CAB based STRs and SDOCs with 2. CAB based STRs and SDOCs by February 2. Manufacturers are asked to contact OIC with any questions or concerns about making this new timeline. For more information, visit the Approved (Grant- Eligible) Equipment page. CAB Exception for Conventional Interoperability with Dispatch Console Testing. August 2. 8, 2. 01. Until February 2. DHS OIC is granting an exception for “rule of three” conventional interoperability testing for specific test cases. This exception is being granted due to delays in getting a sufficient number of P2. Test Labs accredited for conventional interoperability testing. The test cases receiving the exception are in Table 1. Conventional Interoperability Tests – FNE Includes Dispatch Consoles Mode of the Project 2. Compliance Assessment Program Baseline Common Air Interface Testing Requirements (P2. CAB- CAI_TEST_REQ August 2. For the equipment submitted under this exception, DHS OIC will add a note on the P2. CAP web page that states the equipment was submitted with an exception for Conventional Interoperability with Dispatch Console testing. The SDOC that is submitted shall state in the P2. CAB- CAI_TEST_REQ – AUGUST 2. Section 2. 1. 3. 2 paragraph: “Conventional Interoperability Tests – FNE Includes Dispatch Consoles Mode testing was not completed when submitted.”The STR that is submitted shall display a test case result of ‘E’ for all test cases where the exception is being claimed for the test cases listed under INTEROPERABILITY TESTING (7. MHZ, 8. 00 MHZ) – CONVENTIONAL FNE INCLUDES DISPATCH AND OTHER MONITORING CONSOLES (REPEAT MODE (SU- TO- FNE- TO- SU) OR DIRECT MODE). A new comment row shall be added in the STR Comments table. The row shall state “E: Exception to Conventional Interoperability Tests – FNE Includes Dispatch Console Mode”. Updated Summary Test Report and Suppliers’ Declaration of Compliance Templates – Published. August 1. 5, 2. 01. In light of the Encryption Requirements Compliance Assessment Bulletin (CAB), the Summary Test Report (STR) and Suppliers’ Declaration of Compliance (SDOC) templates have been updated. Please begin to use this template format immediately. The templates can be found on the P2. CAP Bulletins page. If you would like to receive the editable template in Microsoft Word, contact P2. The 2. 01. 7 Baseline CAI CAB adds requirements for Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) performance testing, TDMA trunking interoperability testing and trunking supplementary data testing to the requirements already included in the 2. Baseline CAI Testing Requirements CAB. To be clear, these documents do not yet take the place of the 2. Baseline CAI Testing Requirements CAB and the its accompanying SDOC and STR templates. DHS OIC wants manufacturers and P2. CAP test laboratories to see what is expected in the new 2. CAI CAB. DHS OIC understands that it will take time for participating P2. CAP test laboratories to prepare for these additional tests. Manufacturers are encouraged to test equipment to the 2. CAI CAB as soon as they are able to but no deadline will be established at this time. DHS OIC still expects manufacturers to test equipment to the 2. CAI TEST REQ CAB as announced in August 2. SDOC and STR templates based on 2. CAI CAB. The P2. 5 CAP web site has the capability to post and sort on 2. SDOCS an STRS. Manufacturers may determine which SDOCs and STRs they want on the P2.
